Lions for Lambs

I just finished the movie Lions for Lambs. A bit over the top in its liberal polemics. However, it made one point that especially resonates with me. That point is: suspicion. It occurred to me that in our post-modern world following on the 20th Century skepticism that suspicion is the key defining element in our culture. We are suspicious of everyone that is different from us and every institution that would seem to promote a different philosophy than ones one.

What is immensely interesting is the intersect of this milieu with the black-white problems that I have recently experienced in the North East. The whites are suspicious that the blacks will retaliate against the injustice that the whites have laid upon the blacks. The blacks are suspicious that the whites are using every angle to maintain their power and suppression of blacks from power and authority.

Crossing this is the post-modern milieu that sees everything in terms of power plays. Noting is done and nothing is embarked upon unless there is a power play under riding it. I sympathize with this thinking and I often find myself viewing the word with this type of lens.  However, I am corrected by my knowledge of a greater power play functioning behind the scenes – over and above the scheming of men.  Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand”.
